Ben, first time reading your blog, and loving it!!
Not able to comment much on disc brakes and Instapaper, but this stair rail is something of beauty and yes, would be perfect for your basement stairs. At one point, in the good old days when construction was booming, a few visits to the scrap piles of new houses would have provided most of the 2x4s needed, for $0. The needed sanding and varathane = $20. pretty neat deal.
